Psoriasis overview

Psoriasis symptomsPsoriasis symptoms

Are you experiencing dry, scaly, and itchy patches on your skin that just don’t seem to go away? If so, there is a chance that it might be psoriasis. This common skin condition impacts about 3% of the world’s population.

There are several different kinds of psoriasis, and symptoms may manifest differently depending on the type of disease and the specific case. Some of the more common psoriasis symptoms include:

  • Raised patches on the skin, called plaque
  • Painful itching and thickening of the skin
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Nail problems, such as cracking, crumbling, or falling off

Causes of psoriasis

All of the exact causes of psoriasis are not yet clear. However, scientists have discovered some specific hallmarks and risk factors of the disease.

It is believed that there is a genetic component to psoriasis, as those who develop psoriasis often have one or more individuals in their family who are similarly afflicted. There seems to be a combination of genetic factors and immune system contributors that lead to the development of psoriasis.

There is often a “trigger” event that precedes the development of psoriasis. Some of the more commonly reported trigger events include a time of great stress, strep throat, skin damage, or taking certain medications. It is important to note that not all people who experience trigger events will develop psoriasis.

Psoriasis treatment

Although psoriasis cannot be cured, many cases can be well managed with the help of a skilled dermatologist. Some people may see a complete clearing of their skin once properly treated.

The treatment that your dermatologist recommends for you will vary based on the type of psoriasis you have and the severity of your specific case. Often, treatment includes prescription ointments, oral medications, or injected medications. Light therapy may be used as well. Diet and lifestyle changes may also be recommended by your doctor.
