Dermatology treatment for melasma

DermatologyWhat is melasma?

Even if you haven’t heard the term melasma before, you are probably familiar with what it looks like. Melasma is a very common skin problem that affects millions of Americans, most of them women.

Melasma causes brown or grayish brown colored patches to develop on the skin. It commonly appears on the face, such as across the forehead or above the lip. Other places where melasma is prevalent are areas that are exposed to a lot of sun, such as the forearms and the neck. Melasma is not dangerous, and it does not cause pain or other adverse symptoms besides its appearance. However, most patients would like to get rid of it for aesthetic reasons.

What causes melasma?

The exact causes of melasma are not completely clear. However, doctors and scientists have identified some factors that make you more likely to be susceptible to melasma.

Ninety percent of melasma sufferers are women. The condition is most common in women with darker skin, such as those who are Hispanic or African-American. There seems to be a genetic component, as those with a blood relative who had melasma are more likely to get it themselves.

Sun exposure and hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, can instigate or exacerbate a case of melasma.

How does a dermatology practice treat melasma?

If you think you may be suffering from melasma, you should make an appointment with your dermatology professional. The first thing you will want to do is get a proper diagnosis and rule out any other conditions.

Next, talk to your dermatology professional about treatment options. This may include topical treatments, like hydroquinone or tretinoin. If these treatments fail to work or the case is severe, your dermatologist may recommend a cosmetic dermatology procedure such as microdermabrasion, a peel, or laser treatment. In many cases, however, melasma may heal or fade on its own with time.
