What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic dermatology treatment that can reduce the signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, stretch marks, and acne scarring. It is minimally invasive, with little or no down time. It is also known as “collagen induction therapy” or CIT. A board-certified dermatologist will prick the skin of the desired treatment area with tiny surgical steel needles, to a very specific depth in the skin. This creates what are called, micro-injuries; which stimulate the body’s healing process and the renewed production of capillaries, collagen, and elastin to produce more youthful looking skin.
Medical microneedling versus at home rollers
There are a few devices in which individuals can perform some sort of CIT at home. The most popular or common device is called a dermaroller. Basically, it is a round tube on a handle, with needles sticking out of the round tube roller. The user rolls this device back and forth across the skin repeatedly. Regrettably, the needles will eventually dull after continued use. It is also difficult to ensure that the needles are sterile each time they are used.
When Microneedling is performed by a cosmetic dermatologist, the procedure is far more maneuverable, is sterile, and can be used anywhere on the body. The needle length is adjustable. The needles are designed to reach a more therapeutic depth, and you do not need to worry about the process dragging or tearing at your skin. The needle length is adjustable, making the procedure custom-tailored to each patient’s needs or goals.
Is there down-time after treatment?
Most patients report some mild swelling and pinkness for 2 to 4 days after the treatment, but there is no downtime associated with microneedling. It is recommended that you do not wear makeup for a day or two after treatment. This is so the tiny channels in the skin have enough time to close. You will experience light peeling of the treated skin several days after treatment, but you should be completely able to stick to your normal routine.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatments are typically spaced out in four-week intervals. Anywhere from 3-6 treatments will be necessary to achieve the desired results. Each treatment session lasts for approximately 1 hour; this largely depends on your skin condition and the size of the area being treated. Your dermatologist will recommend multiple sessions for the best results.
