Dermatology list of healthy holiday foods for great skin

DermatologyHoliday healthy foods

Dermatology practitioners want everyone to understand how their eating choices can impact your skin condition. You can be sure that nearly everybody is concerned about over eating during the holidays. The good news is that many foods associated with the holidays can provide various anti-aging benefits. We want to help you to recognize which foods provide these benefits, and which tend to cause health issues. For most people, the problem is more related to the quantity of foods consumed rather than the types of foods that cause weight gain and other issues. Your Charlotte dermatologist recommends that you consider both the quantity and the types of foods that you consume.

The benefits of turkey and fish

Turkey is an excellent source of nutrients for healthy skin. It is high in concentration of proteins and zinc. Zinc is necessary for maintaining the body’s natural collagen and elastin levels. Turkey is a staple for holiday meals, so keep the portions moderate, and enjoy!

Healthy choices in fish should be part of your diet throughout the year due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acids. These are “good” fats that coincidently, provide several skin rejuvenation properties. Not all types of fish are the same, some contain more fish oil than others. We recommend the following fish:

  • Mackerel
  • Trout
  • Herring
  • Tuna
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Whitefish

Consider substituting fish for some red meat dishes if you want to eat for better skin. Eating moderate amounts of fish every week, would be considerably more beneficial to your skin and health.

Cranberries, fruits and vegetables

Some people would never think of holiday dinners without cranberries. Cranberries are rich in antioxidants, which protects the skin from free radicals, which can cause skin to age prematurely. Free radicals are toxic byproducts of oxygen metabolism that can cause significant damage to living cells. The vitamins and minerals that the body needs to counteract this damage are called antioxidants.

The following list of antioxidant foods are delicious and can be easily incorporated into any holiday meal:

  • The best antioxidant berries are acai, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries
  • Pomegranate is used in many skincare products for its high antioxidant and anti-aging power
  • Green tea can contain caffeine, but it is high in potent, strong antioxidants
  • Apples are high in antioxidants, and red delicious apples have been found to be the highest
  • Alcohol is very dehydrating, but red wine is high in a powerful antioxidant, so enjoying in moderation
  • Dark chocolate can increase antioxidant levels
  • Garlic is a strong antioxidant food, it’s also useful for decreasing blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Tomatoes happen to be one of nature’s richest sources of lycopene, one of the strongest antioxidants
  • Broccoli and sweet potato are two of the vegetables highest in antioxidants

Healthy eating is important, but it is not enough to keep your skin looking youthful. Facial treatments and cosmetic dermatology treatments will help keep you looking fresh and rejuvenated for the Holidays.
