What is proper skin care for Charlotte women in menopause?

Skin care for those over 60Caring for your skin in menopause

Skin care changes as there are changes to your skin and hair that occur in menopause. Menopause is officially defined and begins one year after your last period. For most women, it brings some conspicuous changes to your skin and hair. Your skin can become dry, slack, and thin. You may begin to notice hair on your face, and less hair on your scalp. Your Charlotte dermatologist has helpful recommendations that can lessen these changes. Consider the following recommendations.

Age spots and sun-damaged skin

Most of us have spent a lifetime of time in the sun without sun protection. The beautifully tanned skin of our youth now is marked with age spots and obvious areas of darker skin on your face, hands, neck, arms, or chest. We are at higher risk for skin cancer and pre-cancerous skin growths. To protect your skin, apply sunscreen every day before going outdoors. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. This can help prevent new spots from forming and reduce your risk of getting skin cancer. See your Charlotte dermatologist for a skin cancer screening.

Thinning skin

As estrogen levels fall your skin becomes thinner. Thin skin also bruises easily. If you have an issue with thinning skin, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day. This will not thicken your skin, but it can prevent further thinning. Consult with a dermatologist about other treatment options. Your dermatologist will be able to recommend a product(s) that may work for you. It could range from use of a retinoid cream to laser treatment.

Dry skin

In menopause, our skin loses much of its ability to hold water, causing skin to be quite dry. To combat dry skin, start by washing with a mild cleanser instead of soap. Soap is typically too drying, particularly deodorant bars. Apply a moisturizer after bathing and anytime that your skin feels dry. Your dermatologist may recommend exfoliation or microdermabrasion, avoid trying one of these therapies at home without a consult, you may cause more harm than good.

Developing facial hair

As hormones levels fall, you may notice unwanted hair under your chin, along your jawline, or above your lip. Waxing may be an option, but if your skin is too thin for waxing, it can easily tear and bleed. To remove unwanted hair, see your dermatologist. A board-certified dermatologist will know what is best for you to remove unwanted hair. Possible options include laser hair removal and a prescription hair-reduction cream.
