Does my Charlotte dermatologist offer tips for sunscreen use?

dermatologistCharlotte dermatologist tips for sun protection

Dermatologists are constantly reminding us about the importance of protecting our skin from the sun. Many people have long-held misconceptions about sunscreen use, which causes them to apply sunscreen incorrectly. Hence, they are not getting maximum sun protection. When it comes to the use of sunscreen this summer, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Use the proper SPF

SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor.” SPF for sunscreens can range anywhere from 5 to 100. It is recommended that you use an SPF of at least 15 every. However, if you are going to be in the sun for an extended period of time, we recommend SPF 30 or higher. Regardless of SPF, you still need to reapply sunscreen after swimming. You need to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours even if you use a high SPF. You should also choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

  1. Apply enough sunscreen

Surprisingly, most people do not apply enough sunscreen to take full advantage of its effectiveness. A thin layer of sunscreen only minimally protects, leaving your skin very susceptible to sun damage. To get the SPF listed, you need to apply at least a half teaspoon to your face, and one ounce (about a shot glass full) to the uncovered areas of your body.

  1. SPF in makeup isn’t effective

Most people are unaware that it takes seven times the normal amount of foundation to get the SPF listed on the label. You should always use a regular sunscreen of at least SPF 15 instead.

  1. Men should remember their beard

If you have a very long, thick beard, your facial hair can offer sun protection. However, men still need to wear sunscreen on uncovered parts of the body and face. You should also make sure to cover commonly missed areas, such as your face and chin that is covered by a short beard or stubble.

  1. Check Expiration Dates

Sunscreens do expire. Far too often we reach into the cabinet to grab a bottle that hasn’t been used since last year. Every sunscreen label contains an expiration date. If you check your bottle and cannot find an expiration date, assume that it expires three years from when you bought it. As a general rule of thumb, it is advisable that you buy new sunscreens every year. If you are applying sunscreen properly with each use, a bottle shouldn’t last you more than a season.
