Winter survival tips for Charlotte psoriasis patients

Psoriasis can be managed in winter

The cold and dry weather of Charlotte, NC can dry out the skin and more so for people with psoriasis. Their chances of having a flare up are greater than with people with normal skin. Instead of waiting for warm, humid, weather; we thought we would offer some wintertime survival tips that can help control the symptoms of psoriasis. Consider the following:

Moisturize your skin

Dry skin can trigger psoriasis flares. To keep your skin moist, use oil-based ointments instead of thin lotions. Apply the ointments as soon as you can after a bath or shower. This will keep the most moisture on and in your skin. Your skin will also appear fresh and healthy from moisturizing.

Keep hydrated

Stay hydrated during cold, dry months. This helps your skin at the cellular level. Carry a refillable container when you are on the go. Men need about 120 ounces of fluid per day, while women need approximately 90 ounces. It is okay to get fluid from foods and other drinks as part of that total. If the air in your home is dry, use a humidifier in the rooms that you use the most, or at least in your bedroom.

Manage your stress

Stress is a real threat to our health. The cold, dry winter climate combined with the stress of winter living is a recipe for psoriasis plaque attacks. Avoid stress by managing your daily schedule. Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing to induce a calm perspective.

Use gentle skin cleansers

Psoriasis sufferers should always use gentle, moisturizing cleansers instead of harsh, oil-stripping soaps. It’s best to avoid scented products also. Fragrance-free and dye-free laundry soaps are the most skin-friendly. Take this tip seriously to avoid untoward skin conditions.

Get plenty of exercise

Regular exercise or some other kind of activity can help keep psoriasis flares away. You do not need to join an exercise class; you could simply walk laps at the mall or through the neighborhood to keep your muscles moving and your body healthy.
