Botox basics

Botox experts- at your south Charlotte Dermatologist- Metrolina DermatologyBotox provides relief for wrinkles caused by muscle movement, or due to age.  Botox consists of a series of anti-wrinkle injections to produce a more youthful appearance.  The sessions are short, and the recovery afterwards is minimal.  These injections will have an effect on areas around the eyes, nose, lips, forehead and neckbands.  One could also receive Botox to relieve hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the underarms or palms.

The procedure

After making an appointment with your dermatology expert, your Botox procedure begins with a conversation about your areas of interest.  Your skin care expert will then determine the correct number of doses for the treatment to highlight your areas of concern.  The needle used is small, and the pain is no more than a small pinprick.  It takes 48 hours to see results of Botox treatments, and some customers choose to come back for multiple treatments to achieve optimal results.

Botox side effects

Botox treatments rarely have considerable side effects.  Some swelling near injection points could occur, but these will usually subside after 48 hours.  Your skin care expert will discuss these side effects with you before the session.  In most cases, the side effects are minimal, and you can usually avoid them easily.  It’s recommended that you not drink alcohol or take any anti-inflammatory drugs 48 hours before you are to receive Botox treatment.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that sets in due to excessive sweating, particularly in the underarms and palms.  This can cause moderate to severe discomfort, and has been known to have an effect on a person’s social comfort level or psychological well-being.  Botox is a very safe and effective way to inhibit the effect of Hyperhidrosis, and locals of the Charlotte, NC area would be wise to make appointments with your skin-care expert to being injection sessions.

When Botox might not be a good idea

Patients that are nursing or pregnant should not use Botox injections.  There have not yet been studies done on pregnant or nursing women, so while there may not be any side effects, it’s better not to take the risk.  If you have a neuromuscular disease, such as multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis, you shouldn’t have Botox treatments, either.  Finally, there are many medications that some take that could make Botox unadvisable.  Be sure to bring a list of current medications to your skin care expert to be sure you aren’t taking something that would negatively affect your Botox treatment.
