Charlotte Dermatologist tips for managing rosacea

South Charlotte dermatologistCharlotte Dermatologists recognize rosacea month

Dermatologists understand well that the burden of illness in rosacea has a significant impact for patients who must deal with this skin condition. It is one thing for Santa or a cherub to be characterized with rosy cheeks, but for those who suffer from this chronic disorder, it is not so endearing. The National Rosacea Society has designated April as Rosacea Awareness Month in an effort to educate the public on how this condition affects an estimated 16 million Americans and 415 million worldwide. We want to offer some tips for managing this as of yet, uncurable skin condition, and to urge those with warning signs to see a dermatologist for diagnosis and therapy.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea (pronounced “roh-ZAY-sha”) is a complex disorder of the facial skin that is often characterized by redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. Rosacea may also occur on the skin of the neck, chest, scalp or ears. In many cases, visible blood vessels may appear. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rosacea and the cause is unknown. The key to effectively managing rosacea is to follow the medical therapy prescribed by your doctor and to avoid lifestyle factors that aggravate your condition.

Proper skin care

Proper skin care is a significant part of rosacea management. Patients need to take special care in the selection of cleansers and moisturizers that do not irritate your skin. Avoid any products that cause burning, stinging or itching. Rosacea skin is particularly susceptible to sun damage. The use of sunscreens or sun blocks that are effective against the full spectrum of ultraviolet A and B radiation are vitally important. An SPF of 15 or higher is recommended. Sun blocks that utilize zinc or titanium dioxide are most effective; as chemical sunscreens can cause irritation.

Cleansing

Always wash your face gently, with a fragrant-free cleanser. Avoiding abrasive materials such as a washcloth or loofah. Use lukewarm water and wait for your face to dry completely before applying topical medication, sunscreen, or makeup. Men should use an electric shaver to avoid the irritation of a dull blade.

Cosmetics

Cosmetics can often successfully conceal the effects of rosacea. Green or yellow tinted products can reduce the appearance of redness. Cover makeup can be used to counter the appearance of blood vessels, bumps, and pimples. Brushes are preferred over sponges because brushes can be easily cleaned and they are not abrasive. Your dermatologist can provide guidance on the best product choices for your condition.
