Dermatologist visit for unusual moles

dermatologistUnusual moles signs and symptoms

Are you keeping track of your moles? It may not be something you think about a lot, but moles can be one of the leading indicators of abnormal skin growths and skin cancer. If you are in tune with your skin and keeping watch for symptoms of change, you will know just when to contact the dermatologist.

In order to make it easy to evaluate your moles, skin experts have devised the mnemonic A, B, C, D, E to help you remember what to look for. When you examine your skin, you will want to be on the lookout for:

  • Asymmetry- a mole that has two sides that would not match if they were bisected.
  • Borders- a mole that has uneven, scalloped, or changing borders may be a cause for concern.
  • Color- Benign moles are usually the same shade of brown. A mole that has several colors, or unusual colors like red, blue, or black, should be looked at.
  • Diameter- Large moles, or moles that grow, should be checked out by your dermatologist.
  • Evolving- If the appearance of a mole changes over time, it is a good idea to have it looked at.

Catching skin changes

It is a good idea to get into a routine of giving your skin a once-over about every month. If you have many moles, you may want to “map” them so you can refer to your notes or a drawing to identify changes or new moles. Enlist a friend or partner to help you examine hard to see areas like your back.

When to see the dermatologist

You should see a dermatologist at least once a year for a check up.  Additionally, if you notice any of the A, B, C, D, E symptoms, you should schedule a dermatologist appointment.

In addition to new or changing moles, contact your dermatologist if you have other skin issues or concerns, such as rashes, growths, dryness, or breakouts.
