Dermatologist tips for children in the sun
Dermatologists are very aware of how important it is to protect children from the sun’s rays.Good parents would never purposely put their children in harm’s way, but when we use a stroller without a sunshade, or apply sunscreen only once a day, we fail to realize that such exposure or a few serious sunburns can significantly increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays whenever they’re outdoors, even on overcast days. Consider the following tips to make sure your children are protected:
- Restrict exposure to midday sun
The sun’srays are strongest and most harmful during midday. Try to plan indoor activities such as lunch and nap time or reading. If this is not probable, seek natural shade or use a canopy. The goal is to prevent prolonged exposure and sunburn.
- Cover up
Clothing can provide protection from UV rays. Clothes that are made from tightly woven fabric that provide shade when held up to the sun offers the best protection. Remember that a wet T-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one. If you are so incline, you can purchase clothing that is certified to provide ultraviolet protection.
- Always wear a hat and sunglasses
Hats are important for providing shade for the face, scalp, ears, and neck. Baseball caps are popular, but they donot protect the ears and neck. If your child chooses a hat, be sure to protect exposed skin with sunscreen. Protecting your child’s eyes from UV rayscan reduce their risk of developing cataracts later in life. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and that block both UVA and UVB rays.
- Always use sunscreen
Sunscreen should have at least SPF 30 and should provide UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) protection.Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply sunscreen every two hours; or after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. Remember, your baby’s best defense against sunburn is avoiding the sun or staying in the shade.
Children are particularly susceptible to sunburn when they are in the sun. Remember to keep sun protection handyin your car, or in a child’s backpack.
