South Charlotte dermatologist discusses sneaky UV radiation

South Charlotte dermatologist wants you to know all of the ways you’re being exposed to hidden UV rays

South Charlotte dermatologistSouth Charlotte dermatologists are specialists when it comes to skin cancer prevention. The general population is already aware of the major sources of harmful UV rays. Laying out in the sun for an extended period of time without wearing any sort of sunscreen, for instance, is a known hazard that many are keen to shy away from. However, there are many “hidden” sources of UV radiation that people don’t know about. This South Charlotte dermatologist wants to inform all those who wish to protect themselves against the sun’s damaging radiation of the lesser-known sources of UV radiation.

UV radiation when there are clouds in the sky

When the forecast calls for rain, or if there are many clouds in the sky, many people believe that they do not need to protect their skin from the sun. However, south Charlotte dermatologists know that this is extremely far from the truth. Clouds do not block the sun’s UV rays, and it is possible (and likely) that you’ll get sun damage on your skin if you are out for too long on an overcast day. Another reason for protecting your skin with sunscreen during a rainy day is that rainstorms during the summer months are often quick, and will clear up before you know it. If you didn’t apply sunscreen and a storm has finished, the sun will then proceed to damage your skin.

UV radiation when you are at your job

South Charlotte dermatologists also wish to inform the masses about the dangers of receiving harmful UV radiation when you are at work. If you work near a window, then you are not protected from the sun’s rays. While glass will block UVB rays, the ones that are responsible for sunburns, UVA rays can make their way right through glass. UVA rays are what cause your skin to age prematurely, and also contributes to the risk of developing skin cancer. This harmful radiation can reach you even if you are a couple feet away from a window.

UV radiation when you are receiving a manicure

South Charlotte dermatologists understand that getting manicures and pedicures can be a fun way of treating yourself. However, the new fad of receiving a gel manicure actually exposes the skin on your hand to UV radiation. It is best to apply sunscreen on your hands 20 minutes before your appointment. Or, skip the gel manicure altogether and go with a traditional polish.
