South Charlotte dermatologists can help you protect yourself against skin cancer
South Charlotte dermatologists are your local resource when it comes to learning about skin cancer causes and prevention methods. Skin cancer is the most common cancer that is diagnosed in the United States. For the most part, this cancer is almost completely avoidable. Through the implementation of smart and safe cancer prevention strategies, you can protect yourself and your family from the sun’s damaging light rays. South Charlotte dermatologists have a long history of offering skin cancer treatments and advice, and can arm you with the knowledge you need to enjoy the sun without putting yourself or others in harm’s way.
Avoid peak sun exposure times
The sun is at its strongest between the hours of 10 am – 4 pm. When the sun is at its strongest, this means that the amount of damage its rays can do is maximized. We all enjoy being outside and enjoying the sun, however try your best to keep you and your family inside, or in the shade, during this time. South Charlotte dermatologists recommend keeping your sun exposure time to a minimum.
30-30-2-2 sunscreen rule
If you plan on going outside, then protect yourself with sunscreen. Sunscreen that is broad-spectrum and that has an SPF of at least 30 should be applied 30 minutes before the planned outdoors activity. Then, the sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours. (You can reapply sunscreen more often if you feel the need.) If you have gone swimming, or have been sweating in large amounts, then reapply sunscreen as soon as you can dry yourself off. Use an amount of sunscreen that is equal to 2 tablespoons to apply to your exposed skin. South Charlotte dermatologists also recommend applying SPF chapstick to your lips before heading outside.
Wear protective clothing
Sunscreen is a great tool to protect yourself against skin cancer, however, it needs to be used in combination with clothing that is protective. Long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses that block ultraviolet sun rays, and hats with wide-brims are all recommended by South Charlotte dermatologists to be worn when you are going outside on a sunny day.
Say no to tanning beds
Tanning beds are one of the worst things imaginable for you and your skin. The amount of concentrated UV light that you are exposed to while in a tanning bed is dangerous and is not worth the tan you’re getting. Instead, South Charlotte dermatologists recommend that you stick to spray tan options that can provide you with a bronze glow without all of the harmful UV radiation.
