Charlotte Mohs surgeon explains the procedure and its benefits

Mohs Surgery: The advantages

Charlotte Mohs surgeon, Dr. Sasha Haberle, is on the front line of treatment for over 3 million Americans each year. Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are the most common types of skin cancers in this country. Mohs surgery provides us with many advantages in the treatment of basal and squamous cell skin cancers. Mohs is primarily beneficial because it has a very high cure rate; and the surgical technique involves precise excision that has minimal effect on the surrounding healthy tissue. Mohs surgery is also ideal for the treatment of skin cancers that are located on cosmetically important areas such as the face, with little to no scarring.

The first Mohs surgeon

Mohs surgery was first performed in the early 1930s by Dr. Frederic Mohs. He was a Professor of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin when he created the treatment for skin cancer. Statistics reveal that Mohs surgery has a very high cure rate for the treatment of basal and squamous cell skin cancers. Mohs has a cure rate of up to 99% for skin cancer that has never been treated, and up to 94% for skin cancer that has recurred after previous treatment.

How it works

Mohs surgeons typically perform the procedure as a single-visit in his or her office, requiring only local anesthesia. Mohs surgery involves two steps:

  1. At the beginning of the procedure, a thin layer of tissue that is about 1-2 mm bigger than the tumor, is surgically removed.
  2. For the second step, the removed tissue is microscopically examined. If any tumor is detected, an additional thin layer of tissue is removed from the area. The microscopic examination is repeated until no skin cancer tissue is found.

This process provides for the removal of the skin cancer while preserving as healthy tissue as possible.Mohs surgery is considered the number one treatment of basal and squamous skin cancers. It can be used to treat even the areas on your face, around your eyes, nose, and lips with little to no visible scar.
