Chemical peels can treat many different skin conditions

Chemical Peels- at your south charlotte dermatologistTaking care of your skin is important, and chemical peels can help keep you looking your best. This dermatologic cosmetic procedure is an option to help treat a variety of skin issues on the face, hands, and even neck.

Chemical peels are an option to help treat cosmetic issues such as wrinkles, fine lines, and pigmentation problems. Many patients have chemical peels to rejuvenate their skin and keep skin looking young and fresh.

Chemical peels are not only used as a cosmetic procedure. They can also be utilized to treat medical skin conditions such as acne and even can be used to help treat a variety of precancerous skin conditions.

There are many types of chemical peels

Chemical peels are administered in your dermatologist’s office over multiple sessions. These sessions are schedules weeks apart to give skin a chance to recover. The dermatologist will evaluate your skin, then select the best agent to use to achieve the desired results. The dermatologist will then apply the chemicals to the target area.

Once the chemical is applied, it is not uncommon for patients to experience slight discomfort, such as burning and itching of the skin, while the chemicals get to work exfoliating the skin. The mask will eventually peel off leaving patients with new, regenerated skin.

Skin care is important following a chemical peels

Each time you have a chemical peel, you’ll leave the office with fresh, rejuvenated skin. This new, fresh skin will be sensitive and may be red and swollen once the peel is complete. It can potentially take up to 10 days for skin to fully heal.

Since the skin will be sensitive, wearing sunscreen and protecting the area from exposure to sunlight is important. SPF 30 sunscreen and higher should be applied to the area whenever sun exposure is imminent. Avoiding exposing the area to the sun, or exposing it as little as possible, is the best option.

Chemical peels may not be for everyone

Chemical peels may not be an option for everyone. Be sure to disclose any history of recurring cold sores to the provider while discussing chemical peels as treatment. If you have broken skin on the area, or are experiencing other skin conditions before the chemical peel, it may be best to wait until the area is clear. Chemical peels may also not be a good option for patients who are taking certain medications. The dermatologist will need to complete a full evaluation before performing a chemical peel.
