Are there Charlotte dermatology tips to prevent winter skin problems?

Dermatology tips for winter season

Dermatology patients can avoid an unnecessary trip to their doctor this winter if they follow a few tips that are geared towards prevention. A preventable breakout, or a rash can quickly spoil your winter fun. Your Charlotte dermatologists want to keep your winter days a little more carefree by offering tips to prevent winter skin problems.

Avoiding acne breakouts

  1. Blot sweat from your skin with a clean towel or cloth. Wiping sweat off can irritate your skin, which can lead to a breakout.
  2. Always wash sweaty clothes, headbands, towels, and hats before wearing them.
  3. If you are acne prone, use oil free skin care products that won’t clog your pores.

Preventing dry, irritated skin

  1. Don’t spend too much time in the sun, snow, and dry heated air.
  2. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors.
  3. Use sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30+.
  4. Use a mild cleanser to wash your skin.
  5. Avoid soaps and body washes labeled “antibacterial” or “deodorant.”
  6. Carry moisturizer with you for use after washing your hands and when coming in from the cold.

Reduce your risk of getting folliculitis

  1. Immediately after your workout, change out of tight clothes like exercise leggings and other forms of spandex.
  2. Avoid indoor pools and Jacuzzis if you are unsure about the acid and chlorine levels.
  3. Wear loose-fitting and light-weight clothing when it’s hot and humid.

Take precautions with a manicures and pedicures

  1. Apply a moisturizer to your nails after removing nail polish.
  2. Only visit nail salons that follow strict cleanliness and disinfection guidelines.
  3. Don’t shave your lower legs for 24 hours before you get a pedicure. It could put you at risk for infection.
  4. Do not wear artificial nails to cover up nail problems.
