Charlotte Dermatology tips to prevent summer skin problems

Medical dermatologyDermatology tips for summer season

Dermatology patients can avoid an extra trip to see their doctor this summer if they follow a few tips that are geared towards prevention. Sunburned skin, a preventable breakout, or an itchy rash can quickly spoil your summer fun. Your Charlotte dermatologists want to keep your summer days a little more carefree by offering tips to prevent these summer skin problems.

  1. Avoiding acne breakouts
  • Blot sweat from your skin with a clean towel or cloth. Wiping sweat off can irritate your skin, which can lead to a breakout.
  • Always wash sweaty clothes, headbands, towels, and hats before wearing them.
  • Use oil free skin care products that won’t clog your pores.
  1. Preventing dry, irritated skin
  • Don’t spend too much time in the sun, pool, and air-conditioning.
  • Shower and shampoo immediately after getting out of the pool.
  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors.
  • Use sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30+, that is water resistant.
  • Use a mild cleanser to wash your skin.
  • Avoid soaps and body washes labeled “antibacterial” or “deodorant.”
  • Carry moisturizer with you for use after washing your hands and when your skin feels dry.
  1. Reduce your risk of getting folliculitis
  • Immediately after your workout, change out of tight clothes like biking shorts and spandex.
  • Avoid hot tubs and Jacuzzis if you are unsure about the acid and chlorine levels.
  • Wear loose-fitting and light-weightclothing when it’s hot and humid.
  1. Take precautions with a manicure or pedicure
  • Apply a moisturizerto your nails after removing nail polish.
  • Only visit nail salons that follow strict cleanliness and disinfection guidelines.
  • Don’t shave your lower legs for 24 hours before you get a pedicure. It could put you at risk for infection.
  • Do not wear artificial nails to cover up nail problems.
