About dermatology
Dermatology is a branch of medicine focused on treatment for the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists treat a wide variety of skin issues. Their purview can include serious issues like skin cancer, psoriasis, and eczema. They can also treat aesthetic issues, such as signs of aging.
It is recommended that everyone, even those who are healthy with no known skin issues, see a dermatologist for a well visit at least once a year. If you notice any sudden growths or changes in your skin, it is a good idea to make a dermatologist appointment right away.
Skin changes to look for
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that all individuals do a head to toe examination of their own skin every month. This will allow you to get familiar with the features of your skin (such as moles, birthmarks, etc.) so that you can easily identify any changes.
When conducting a skin examination, be on the lookout for the following:
- New growths or bumps on the skin
- Spots, especially in areas of your skin that receive frequent sun
- Sores or patches
- Flat, firm, pale or yellow areas that may resemble a scar
- Raised, reddish patches that may itch
- Moles that appear, grow, or become raised
- Wart-like growths
- Small, pearly bumps
There are other signs of potential skin issues as well. The best rule of thumb is to be aware of any changes to your skin, and be prepared to discuss them with your dermatology practitioner.
What to do when you notice skin changes
Contact your dermatology office once you notice changes to your skin. You may be able to send him or her photos of the area in question for review.
If your dermatologist recommends that you come into the office to be seen, he or she may recommend having a tissue sample taken in order to check the spot for any abnormal cells. In other cases, your doctor may simply recommend removing the spot or mole entirely, and checking the tissue after wards for any abnormality. This is normally a simple procedure done in the office.
