Understanding a man’s skin
Dermatology experts understand that when it comes to skin care, men want to keep it simple. At the same time, increasing numbers of men are concerned about having healthier skin. The best dermatologists in Charlotte always make time to help men to evaluate their skin care routine, and to learn how to properly take care of their skin. Men are probably aware that their skin is different from women’s skin. However, they often overlook the fact that men have different skin types. This can be broken down into about 5 general categories:
- Normal skin is clear and not sensitive to soaps, shaving creams, or other products
- Sensitive skin stings or burns after using certain products
- Dry skin is flaky, with dry itchy patches, and is rough to the touch
- Oily skin is shiny or greasy, usually plagued with breakouts and blemishes
- Combination skin can be dry in some areas and oily in others
The first step to proper skin care is understanding your skin type. To help men develop a healthy skin care routine, consider the following tips:
- Pay attention to product labels and ingredients
This way you will choose skin care products that are good for your skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, you should use products that are “oil free” or “noncomedogenic.” If you have sensitive skin, use mild and/or “fragrance-free” products. Be aware that “unscented” is not the same as “fragrance free.”
2. Wash your face daily and after exercise
If a soap makes your face squeaky clean, it is probably hassome harsh ingredients.Wash your face with mild soaps, using lukewarm, not hotwater.
3. Use the proper razor
For some men, multi-blade razors can work too well. If you are prone to developing razor bumps, razor burn, or ingrown hairs, stick to a single or double-bladed razor.Do not stretch your skin taut while shaving. Wet your skin and hair, to soften it before shaving. Always shave in the direction of hair growth. Change your blade every five to seven shaves
4. Use a moisturizing lotion or balm
Moisturizers can help to keep your skin healthy and looking younger. Apply the shave balm or moisturizer to your face and body immediately after showering or shaving, while the skin is still damp.
5. Check your skin every month
The point here is to look for suspicious changes that may lead to skin cancer. Look for new spots or moles that itch, bleed, or change color. If you notice any suspicious spots, make an appointment with a Charlotte board-certified dermatologist.
6. Wear sunscreen
Sun damage that can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer. When you must be out in the sun, apply sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. It is recommended that you use a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
