Medical dermatology and mole removal

Medical dermatology and mole examination

Medical Dermatology is the practice of diagnosing and treating internal disease or disorders that can affect the skin. In this article, we are shining the spotlight on moles. Most people overlook the importance of paying close attention to their moles. A sad reality is that someone can miss a mole that may actually be dangerous, leading to future problems. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, a mole gets attention only when it is located in an undesirable spot, or if it isan undesirable color. At least once a year, we should have our moles examined by a board-certified dermatologist. She or he will consult with you to determine whether or not your mole is a potential problem.

Moles and cancer

A mole is not always a sign of cancer. However, moles certainly can eventually become cancerous. If you have a mole that seems to be changing in size, shape, or color; you definitely want to have that examined by your dermatologist. Annual or semi-annual skin cancer screenings are incredibly important when it comes to your health and cancer prevention.

The ABCDE of skin cancer

Dermatologist take every opportunity to talk to patients about the ABCDE of skin cancer prevention. It breaks down as follows:

  • ‘A’ is for asymmetry.

This is when one side of the mole differs from the other half.

  • ‘B’ is for border.

A normal mole is well-defined. The border between a healthy mole and normal skin is very distinct, not ragged or scalloped.

  • ‘C’ is for color.

Typically, mole color should be the same throughout and should not have shades of tan, brown, black, red, white or blue.

  • ‘D’ is for diameter.

A normal mole can be any size.Lesions that are less than 6 millimeters in diameter are less concerning.

  • ‘E’ is for evolving.

If a mole has changed shape, size, or color;it should be evaluated immediately by a dermatologist.

Distinguishing between moles and melanoma is not easy, even for dermatologists. Remember that it is important to schedule annual or semi-annual cancer screenings. Be sure to contact your dermatologist if you have any questions.
