Medical dermatology: common treatments

Medical dermatologyAbout medical dermatology

Medical dermatology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders associated with the hair, skin, and nails. This practice is performed by medical doctors with a specialization in dermatology (dermatologists). Dermatologists focus only on skin conditions; you may receive a referral to a dermatologist from your primary care physician.

It is distinct from cosmetic dermatology and surgical dermatology. Cosmetic dermatology is focused on treating appearances, not necessarily disorders or diseases. Surgical dermatology, as the name implies, is specific to surgery or operations on the skin (such as the removal of melanomas or other skin cancers). Medical dermatology covers just about everything else that can impact the hair, skin, and nails.

Disorders treated with medical dermatology

There are hundreds of ailments that dermatologists see and treat in the practice of medical dermatology. Some of the more common ones include:

  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Rosacea
  • Skin Cancer
  • Bumps and growths
  • Skin dryness or sweatiness
  • Hair loss
  • Skin allergies
  • Rashes

As you can see, medical dermatology runs the gamut. It is a good idea to see a dermatologist regularly, even if you do not think you have a specific problem with your skin. During your annual or semi-annual visit, your dermatologist will evaluate your skin for concerns, such as skin cancer, irregular moles, growths, or discoloration.  Having a regular dermatologist makes it easy to seek treatment if you start to experience symptoms of a skin disease or disorder.

Common medical dermatology treatments

Just as there are many types of skin issues addressed by medical dermatology, there are also a multitude of treatments available to dermatologists to treat and heal skin concerns. Dermatologists can prescribe medication, and will often do so for conditions like acne, psoriasis, or eczema. These prescriptions may include topical applications (creams) or oral medications. For bumps, growths, or suspected skin cancer, dermatologists may recommend surgery or excision. This is often done right in the office and requires little to no downtime. Laser or intense pulsed light treatments are another frequent recommendation in medical dermatology, used to treat discoloration or irritation.

Not all medical dermatology treatments are drastic. Sometimes, your dermatologist may simply advise lifestyle changes, such as a change in diet or in sun exposure habits, to treat or heal your concerns.
