Medical dermatology treatment in Charlotte NC for seborrheic dermatitis

Medical dermatology for flakey skin

Medical dermatology is the clinical treatment of disease processes of the hair, skin, and nails. Our skin is one of our most active systems, and we are constantly forming new epidermal cells. When these cells end up being close to the surface of the skin, they slowly die, and the visual manifestation of this is crusty flakes. This is a normal process that happens all the time for everyone. However, for some people, the rate of epidermal cell development is accelerated. The conditions that result from this increased rate of top layer shedding is either dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

Dandruff

When seborrheic dermatitis only involves the scalp, this is dandruff. Dandruff can be asymptomatic(of a condition or a personshowing no symptoms) or it can cause mild flaking and itching. Typically, the best way to treat dandruff is with the use of over-the-counter medicated shampoos that contain either pyrithione zinc, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide. Rub them into the hair like any other shampoo, leavethem on for a few minutes, and then rinse off. These products can be used daily or 2-3 times per week until the symptoms are gone. Recurrence can be prevented by continuing to use one of these dandruff shampoos 2-3 times per week.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by a greater turnover rate of skin cells than in dandruff. Most scientists and dermatologists concur that a fungal species called Malassezia is the root cause for seborrheic dermatitis. This yeast metabolizes the oils produced by sebaceous glands, creating an irritating acid that starts the inflammatory cascade that leads to the overproduction of the topmost layer of skin cells. The result is flaking and scaling. This disrupts the barrier function of the skin and it loses moisture. The yeast and inflammation cycle continues until something changes the sebaceous gland activity or through medical dermatology intervention.

Who gets seborrheic dermatitis?

People with an impaired immune system experience an increased prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis. It is often seen in children younger than 6 years of age. Seborrheic dermatitis is also reported during puberty and in adulthood. It is estimated that 1-3% of adults are affected, usually adults in their 30s and 40s. The skin of adults becomes red, itchy, flaky, and scaly; similar to that which is found in infants. Seborrheic dermatitis seems to get worse during cold and dry winter months and during times of stress.
