What is PRP?
PRP is an acronym for Platelet Rich Plasma, itis a natural product that is naturally produced in our bodies. This platelet rich plasma is injected as a treatment to soften or eliminate wrinkles. Where does it come from? A small amount of blood is drawn from you, and that blood is spun down in a centrifuge, to separate the different components of the blood. Red and white blood cells are separated from the sample, leaving a clear fluid called plasma, that now contains a higher than normal number of platelets; hence, it is called platelet rich plasma or PRP.
Platelets rejuvenates skin
Platelets are the cells in the blood that are designated to help tissue to heal and grow new cells. The PRP is injected into specific areas of the skin, acting as a catalyst that promotes collagen production and the regeneration of tissue. The result is naturally smoothed and tightened skin.
The difference between PRP therapy and other fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers are composed of solid material that fills fine lines and skin folds. These fillers soften deeper lines such as the folds around the mouth area, or to plump lips. The effect of hyaluronic acid fillers usually lasts from 6-18 months, then treatments are required to fill the area again.
PRP stimulates collagen to grow, which is actual facial rejuvenation, rather than wrinkle reduction. PRP is ideal for volumizing faces that have begun to look drawn, to fill out cheek indentations and under-eye hollows. Additionally, it can improve the skin tone, tightness, and texture; filling in areas where hyaluronic acid fillers cannot reach, or they are not safe to use.
What to expect during and after the PRP procedure
Before the procedure, a small amount of blood will be drawn from you. While the plasma is being prepared, your skin will be cleansed and prepped for the treatment. The injections are mildly discomforting, but the procedure is quick, lasting on average about 15 minutes total. There is no need for special post procedure care, or down time from daily events. Patients can expect some mild swelling or bruising that will dissipate within 1-3 days. The PRP is made from your own blood plasma, so there is virtually no possibility of adverse side effects.
