Microneedling procedure in Charlotte
Microneedling has been around for a very long time, but only recently has it gained popularity as a useful procedure to improve wrinkles and scars. It seems so ironic that having your face poked with hundreds of tiny needles improves its appearance. However, it has been proven that after penetration of these small needles into skin, your skin goes through some serious healing. The injured skin starts with mild inflammation and then releases growth factors, followed shortly by the initiation of collagen production. This healing and improvement of the skin goes on for many months.
How microneedling works
When needles penetrate the skin, they create small holes known as microconduits. If your dermatologist recommends combining augmentation agents or fillers with microneedling, the products can permeate through the channels, leading to the production of collagen, leading to the reduction or elimination of lines, wrinkles, and even scarring. Your dermatologist may decide to combine microneedling with Platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
What to expect
Microneedling treatments are safe and well tolerated by virtually all skin types. The procedure can become uncomfortable, so your dermatologist will apply a topical anesthetic 20-30 minutes prior to treatment. Following the procedure, you should expect to experience some redness and some minor swelling. These side-affects will normally last about 1 to 3 days. Some people apply makeup to cover up the redness during the first few days.During the healing period, your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun, so wearing sunscreen is a must.
It is not uncommon for microneedling to be performed at the same time as other facial treatments, such as Botox®, dermal fillers, chemical peels or dermatologic lasers. The healing and rejuvenation process takes time, so it is important to understand that you will not see immediate results with microneedling. Most patientswill need a series of 2 or 3 treatments, usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Mild to moderate improvement will appear slowly. Microneedling is an effective treatment for all skin types. Skin improvement can last up to 12 months.
