How does microneedling work?
Lately, you may be hearing a lot more about microneedling as a preferred cosmetic treatment. This ancient technique for skin health has recently seen a revival in popularity. But what is it really, and how does it work?
microneedling treatments g uses the practice of “controlled injury” to stimulate regeneration of the skin. It is also called collagen induction therapy. The treatment consists of a motorized device covered with very tiny, fine needles being passed across the surface of the skin.
The needles create tiny, almost microscopic puncture wounds in the surface of the skin. Your body responds by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin- two important elements for smooth, fresh, and young looking skin.
Who is a candidate for microneedling treatments?
One of the great benefits of microneedling is that it can be safe an effective treatment for any skin type. Microneedling does not use light, which can be problematic on certain skin tones, and it is minimally invasive. Microneedling helps reduce the signs of aging, improves pigmentation issues, improves acne scars and diminishes pore size.
With proper equipment, microneedling can be used on almost any area of the skin, even “thin” skin like the backs of the hands and the insides of the arms. However, caution is recommended when microneedling near an active infection. Because the treatment does involve making tiny skin wounds, there is potential to spread the infection.
What should one expect from microneedling treatments?
Usually, several treatments of microneedling are recommending to get the maximum benefits. These treatments can be administered right in your dermatologist’s office. We recommend 3-6 treatments spaced monthly for optimal results.
During the treatment, your provider will apply a topical numbing cream for 20-30 minutes before the procedure. They will use a device with a tip containing multiple needles (disposable and motorized) to create the tiny needle pricks in your skin. Depending on the location and the depth, there may be some discomfort associated with the treatment.
Microneedling is considered to be a “no downtime” procedure. There might be slight bleeding during the treatment and the skin will likely be pink after the treatment. You may have some redness or mild swelling resembling a sunburn from the treatment, but it is usually minor and does not last long. In most cases, makeup can be applied the next day.
