What is Mohs surgery?

There are five steps to a complete Mohs surgery.

  • Step one: the portion of the skin cancer that is visible to the eye is removed.
  • Step two: the Mohs surgeon will remove a layer of skin and divvy it up into sections. Each section will be dyed a different color and will be noted where on the body the section came from. A map of the skin will then be created.
  • Step three: each section is observed under a microscope and scanned for cancer that may be remaining after the initial removal.
  • Step four: the Mohs surgeon will mark the location of any extra cancer cells that have been found on the skin “map” and will remove more skin in that section only.
  • Step five: this process will be repeated by the Mohs surgeon until all biopsies come up clean and cancer free.

Since this revolutionary skin cancer surgery involves the Charlotte Mohs surgeon only removing the skin that has been infected with cancer cells, the surgeon will remove the smallest amount of skin possible.

“Slow Mohs” is a modified form of Mohs surgery that is completed by a Charlotte Mohs surgeon. In this procedure, sun-exposed skin that posses early melanomas is treated. The difference between Mohs surgery and “Slow Mohs” is that Mohs surgery is done in one sitting, with the doctor searching biopsied skin for remaining cancer during the procedure. “Slow Mohs” involves removing the visible early melanoma, sending off a biopsy to an off-site pathologist, and having the patient return to the doctor’s office for further surgery if necessary.
