Charlotte Mohs surgeon – Dr. Sasha Haberle, wants you to know what to expect with skin cancer surgery

Charlotte Mohs surgeons are first in their class at delivering skin cancer-removal procedures that save lives. If you have recently been diagnosed with skin cancer and are anticipating your skin cancer surgery, this guide will help inform you of what the procedure will entail. Mohs surgery is a revolutionary skin cancer removal technique that has changed the game when it comes to skin cancer surgeries.

Charlotte Mohs surgeonWhat is Mohs surgery?

Charlotte Mohs surgeons are trained in Mohs surgery, a procedure that involves sparing tissues by removing only the sections of the skin that are affected by cancer. The surgery involves removing small parts of the skin, layer by layer. After each layer is removed, a section of it is examined for any remaining signs of cancer. If cancer is found, then more skin is removed. The process continues until all cancer has been removed from the skin. The patient is awake for the surgery, as only the use of a local anesthetic is needed. Typically no more than three passes are needed to completely remove all the cancer. A Mohs surgery procedure can take anywhere from one to three hours. After the first biopsy, the patient will wait for around 30 minutes while the doctor looks at the skin biopsy through a microscope to figure out where the skin cancer is.

Who is a good candidate for Mohs surgery?

Charlotte Mohs surgeons advise the use of Mohs surgery for skin cancer that is found around the ears, nose, mouth and eyes. Skin cancer found on the feet, hands and neck areas can also be removed using Mohs surgery. Any area that would benefit from sparing as much skin as possible is conducive for the Mohs surgery technique.

What does Mohs surgery feel like?

If you have ever had a biopsy done, which is more than likely considering you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer, then you know what Mohs surgery will feel like. The area that is being operated is numbed with local anesthetic, so there will be discomfort from the shot, but aside from that, minimal sensations should be felt in the area. After the surgery is done, Charlotte Mohs surgeons say that the surgical site may be uncomfortable enough to the point where prescription pain medication is needed, but typically over-the-counter pain medication should suffice.
