What a Mohs surgeon does
A Mohs surgeon is a dermatologist who is specially trained and qualified to perform Mohs micrographic surgery. This surgery is a common treatment for skin cancers, especially basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
A Mohs surgeon is usually a “regular” dermatologist that has also completed the necessary training and qualifications to perform Mohs surgery. This means that if you see one of these doctors, you can get all of your skin care treatment, from your annual checkup to a Mohs surgery, from the same individual.
The process of Mohs micrographic surgery
A Mohs surgeon will usually perform Mohs micrographic surgery in their medical office or surgical suite. It is uncommon for Mohs surgery to require a hospital visit.
During Mohs surgery, the surgeon will go through a series of steps to make sure that the affected area is removed with minimal impact on the surrounding healthy skin. First, he or she will remove the visible skin cancer. Next, a layer of surrounding skin will be removed. At this point, you will wait while the removed skin is examined under a microscope.
If no cancer cells are found, the surgery is over. If there are cancer cells present in the sample, the Mohs surgeon will remove another layer for microscopic inspection. This process will repeat until a “clean” sample is found.
If necessary, the Mohs surgeon will address your wound after the procedure. Some wounds need no stitches or other procedures to heal properly. Larger or deeper wounds may require stitches, a skin graft, or other treatment. In some cases, the patient may be referred to another doctor (such as a plastic surgeon) for treatment of the wound.
Mohs micrographic surgery is very common, and generally very safe. The success rate of the surgery is excellent. If you have any questions about your specific case or what to expect, your Mohs surgeon can help answer them in a consultation.
