Effective cancer surgery
Mohs surgery (known as Mohs micrographic surgery) is used by dermatologists to treat skin cancer. The objective is to remove as much of the cancer as possible; while saving the healthy tissue that surrounds it. Microscopic layers of skin are removed one at a time. Each layer is examined under a microscope until a layer is removed that is free of cancer cells. Mohs surgery is extremely effective and greatly reduces the chance of needing future treatments or surgery.
Why is it called Mohs?
In the 1930s, a doctor named Frederick Mohs developed the treatment for skin cancer. Technology has produced other surgical options in recent years, however, many surgeons still rely on this procedure to treat skin cancer. For nearly 100 years, Mohs surgery is considered the most effective treatment for two of the most common types of skin cancer:
- basal cell carcinoma
- squamous cell carcinoma
It can also be used to treat other kinds of skin cancers.
How it is performed
Mohs surgery is performed in an operating room, but it can also be done in a doctor’s office with a nearby lab. The surgery usually lasts about 4 hours and is provided on an outpatient basis. In some cases, the surgery can last longer, so patients should plan to set aside the whole day for it. A doctor or nurse will prep the area for surgery by cleaning the affected area. The next step is to inject the skin with medicine, so the patient will not feel any pain. The Mohs surgeon will remove the visible part of the cancer with a scalpel. She or he will also remove a thin layer of tissue under the visible cancer and apply a temporary bandage to the surgical site. The tissue layers will be taken to the lab to be examined under a microscope. If there is still evidence of cancer cells, additional layers will be removed until no more cancer can be seen. Cutting the layers of skin might take only a few minutes, but the analysis of the layers can take much longer.
