Are there any tips for Charlotte patients that suffer with psoriasis?

psoriasisPsoriasis patients are not alone

Did you know that nearly seven and a half million people in the U. S. has some form of psoriasis? The most common form is plaque psoriasis, which is characterized by raised patches of dead skin cells that look much like silvery scales. Frequently itchy, these patches often appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, and the lower back. However, they are known to appear anywhere on the body. Unfortunately, there is no cure for psoriasis, but there are a number of treatments that can help you manage the condition. We want to offer some helpful tips that can ease your psoriasis symptoms and reduce the frequency of flare ups. Consider the following:

Moisturize daily

Persons with psoriasis need to moisturize daily; particularly after bathing, showering, or washing your hands. Keeping the skin moisturized is crucial for reducing itching. Moisturizing also diminishes redness and helps your skin to heal from flare-ups. Look for a moisturizer that contains lipids and oils. Only purchase products that are labeled hypoallergenic, fragrance free, non-sensitizing, or non-comedogenic. Avoid products that contain dyes, fragrances, alcohol, and chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin.

Reduce your stress

Psoriasis is a condition that can leave victims embarrassed and frustrated as flares occur even when you are following treatment. Many have a hard time dealing with their embarrassment over visible symptoms and the stress of following skincare routines. This only increases when a flare-up requires treatment on top of all the academic demands. It is widely accepted that stress is a trigger for psoriasis flares-ups. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends a number of remedies to reduce stress, such as daily exercise and if necessary, counseling or therapy.

Avoid drinking alcohol

Research suggests that alcohol may be detrimental to psoriasis management. Alcohol consumption promotes inflammation, which may trigger psoriasis symptoms, or make the symptoms worse. Alcohol can possibly interact with common psoriasis medication to cause liver damage.

Stick to your treatment plan

Abandoning the treatment plan is common amongst psoriasis patients. Sometimes the rigors of life can cause patients stop taking medications without being instructed to do so. Some only take their medication occasionally instead of following a regular schedule. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including the high cost of a treatment, dealing with adverse side effects, or frustration when symptoms do not improve. Some simply forego taking their medication when symptoms are dormant.

If your treatments or medication is not working for you, discuss it with your dermatologist.
