How do I manage my psoriasis in the Charlotte summer season?

PsoriasisPsoriasis management in the Charlotte summer

Psoriasis patients know that warm weather often spells relief. Monitored exposure to sunlight helps reduce skin patches, and the higher humidity is relief for dry skin. At the same time, the spring and summer can also drum up anxiety about showing more bare skin. Consider the following tips to make the most of the warm summer season.

Be smart in the sunlight

Sunlight plays a significant role in the decrease in psoriasis symptoms during summer. Using the sun smartly will reap wonderful benefits. Check with your dermatologist about sunbathing for about 5 to 15 minutes a day. Use sunscreen on every part of your body except on your psoriasis patches. Sunburns can trigger flares, so never sunbathe for more than 15 minutes. Once you have reached your sunbathing limit, put sunscreen on your psoriasis patches. Be sure to choose a sunscreen that is formulated for sensitive skin.

Take the opportunity to swim

Swimming, especially in saltwater, aids in the removal of dead skin and improves the appearance of psoriasis. Once you have taken a dip, remember that both saltwater and chlorinated water can dry out skin. Immediately after swimming, rinse off well and apply a gentle moisturizer.

Stay cool

Heat and sweat can make your condition worse, particularly on the face and scalp. Air-conditioned environments can help you avoid sweating, but it also dries out your skin. If you spend a lot of time in air-conditioning, moisturize with a heavy cream or ointment twice a day.

Prevent insect bites

Insect bites, particularly from mosquitos, can aggravate psoriasis. So can insect repellents that have DEET. Therefore, to protect yourself, wear long-sleeve shirts with long pants, and try to break indoors at dusk, when mosquitos are most active. Citronella candles can be effective for repelling mosquitoes. There are some natural repellents that do not use DEET, ask your dermatologist for a recommendation.

Try to manage your stress

Anxiety exacerbates your symptoms. Make a conscious effort to partake in activities that can relieve stress. Summer is a great time to leave work and its pressures behind. When you are at home, do things that help you relax.
