Treatment for psoriasisAbout psoriasis

Psoriasis can be difficult to live with, both mentally and physically. This skin condition results in plaques, or areas of thickened scaly skin, on the body. These plaques can be dry, red, and itchy.

Psoriasis is not contagious, so exposure to a person who has it will not result in you contracting the disease. It is triggered by the body producing inflammatory chemicals. These chemicals are created by white blood cells called lymphocytes.

Psoriasis is not curable. It often occurs in flare-ups and remissions. It is not unusual for it to go into remission for several years, and then re-occur.

Psoriasis symptoms

The most common symptom of psoriasis is the development of plaques. The plaques may vary in appearance from person to person and based on the type of psoriasis that the individual has. Plaques are often red, itchy, and elevated. They are most commonly seen on the elbows, knees, and scalp. However, psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body.

Other symptoms of psoriasis include pain in the joints, inflamed tendons, joint stiffness, and dents in fingernails and toenails. If you think you have psoriasis, or if you are looking for treatment, it is best to see a qualified dermatologist.

Common treatments

Just as there are many different types of psoriasis, there are also a lot of potential treatments to help you manage this disease. The treatment that your dermatologist chooses will be dependent on several factors, including the type of psoriasis you have, the severity, frequency of outbreaks, and more.

Some of the more common treatments include:

  • Topical treatments: steroids, vitamin D, retinoids, salicylic acid and more can be directly applied to the affected areas as lotions, gels, or creams.
  • Phototherapy: light therapy with either natural or artificial light
  • Injected or oral medication: Prescriptions such as retinoids, methotrexate, cyclosporine, biologics and more can be taken by mouth or through periodic injections.

Additionally, some patients have achieved improvement with holistic remedies, including aloe vera and fish oil. Make sure you discuss any alternative treatments with your doctor.
