Skin cancer: Men and melanoma

Skin cancerMen and melanoma

Did you know that men are twice as likely as women to be stricken with melanoma- a particularly deadly type of skin cancer? June is men’s health month, and it is a great time to familiarize yourself with tactics to protect yourself from skin cancer, and ensure early detection if it arises.

Melanoma is one of the rarer forms of skin cancer, but it is also the most deadly. Men are not only more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma- they are also more likely to die from it. Early detection is a key element in making sure that melanoma is treated effectively.

How to protect yourself from skin cancer

Skin cancer is common, but many cases are also very preventable. Exposure to UV rays, either from the sun or from artificial sources such as tanning beds, is the most common cause of skin cancers. To reduce your risk of developing melanoma or other skin cancers, take care to protect your skin from the sun:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
  • Never use tanning beds or booths
  • Wear sunscreen daily, even in the winter
  • Cover up when out in the sun- such as with a hat and long sleeves

Additionally, engaging in a healthy lifestyle (eating well, exercising, and not smoking) is thought to be helpful in avoiding cancers of all kinds.

How to detect skin cancer early

Even if you develop melanoma or another skin cancer, it doesn’t need to be deadly. Early detection is the key to ensuring that your skin cancer can be appropriately and effectively treated.

You should make it a habit to examine your skin regularly for any unusual bumps, growths, spots or moles. If you see anything, make an appointment with your dermatologist. Additionally, have a skin cancer screening at least once a year.

Your Charlotte dermatologist for skin cancer

The health of your skin should be an important consideration, especially as you age. If you are not currently seeing a dermatologist regularly, now is a great time to start. An annual visit to a dermatologist can provide your screening for melanoma, as well as any other skin care or skin health issues that you have.
