Skin cancer treatment doctor discusses school year safety

Skin cancer treatment specialist knows how to keep your children safe from the sun

Skin cancer treatmentSkin cancer treatment doctor has advice to give you regarding keeping your little students safe during this upcoming school year. With the brand new school year starting, we can get caught up in many small details and forget much bigger problems. While preparing your child for school with all the right school supplies and uniforms, you may have forgotten one of the most important ways to keep them safe and healthy- sun protection! Luckily, this skin cancer treatment specialist has some quick and easy advice and tips to share with you to keep your students protected from the sun. Sun protection and skin health is an important element to having a safe and productive school year.

Why is there a need to protect your children’s skin?

When your child is at school, they can be exposed to a lot of sunlight. During recess, which typically happens between the hours of 10:00a.m.-2:00 p.m., the sun is at its strongest. This means that the sun’s UV rays are extremely damaging to your child’s skin when they are out on the playground having fun. Children also participate in many after-school activities, such as sports, which can also expose them to harsh rays from the sun. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and it is being discovered more and more often in young adults. Skin cancer treatment doctors say that if a child has had more than 5 harsh sunburns in their life, then their risk of developing melanoma is drastically increased. This is why it is so important to practice safe sun principles during the school year.

How to protect your student

There are simple ways that you can protect your student from the sun they may be exposed to during their school day. Skin cancer treatment specialists say to apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to them every day before they leave for school. Allow your child to pick out which sunscreen is their favorite, so that they enjoy applying it every single day. It’s also smart to store your sunscreen in their bathroom, so they see that it is a part of their daily routine. It’s also a good idea to store a bottle of sunscreen in your child’s locker, so that they can reapply it throughout the day (especially before recess and before any after-school activities.) Before the school year starts, allow your child to pick out a pair of UV-blocking sunglasses and a hat that they can wear to protect themselves. If your school has rules or regulations against wearing sunscreen or any other UV protective accessory, then meet with them to discuss the importance of skin care, or provide them with a doctor’s note explaining how you want your child to be as protected from the sun as possible to minimize their risk of developing skin cancer.
