Skin cancer treatment specialist discusses cancer screenings

Skin cancer treatment can be prevented by having an annual skin cancer screening

Skin cancer screenings at Metrolina Dermatology in Charlotte.Skin cancer treatment is an effective option for the removal of skin cancer. If you have recently undergone skin cancer treatment, then you understand that it can be an extensive process that you do not want to go through again. We are so fortunate to have safe cancer-removal procedures that have saved numerous lives, however, it is important to focus on preventing skin cancer in the first place. One of the most effective ways of preventing the development of skin cancer is limiting your skin’s exposure to the sun, and by using sunscreen to shield it from the sun’s strong UV rays. However, another excellent way to protect yourself from the development of skin cancer is to regularly undergo a skin cancer screening. A dermatologist can conduct a skin cancer screening annually at their office (or more frequently if a suspicious skin lesion is found.) This way, a skin cancer specialist can catch any pre-cancerous lesions on your skin and remove them before they turn into cancer. Skin cancer screenings are smart and effective.

What happens during a skin cancer screening?

A board certified dermatologist will visually inspect your skin. The skin will be searched for any odd-looking growths that may be pre-cancerous skin lesions. These abnormal growths are skin lesions that have the ability to become malignant and transform into skin cancer in the future. The doctor will also search the skin for any rashes or lesions that may be indicative of an underlying internal disease. A dermatoscope, which is a specialized magnifying glass, may sometimes be used. The entire screening process should only last around 10 minutes. If the patient has had melanoma in the past, the screening may take a little longer, however.

What if a suspicious looking growth or lesion is found?

If during your skin cancer screening your doctor found a skin lesion that they consider to be suspicious, there is a variety of treatment options available. Sometimes, the dermatologist may choose to simply monitor the lesion over time. If the lesion changes appearance or becomes more of a threat, then other treatment options may be taken. A biopsy may be taken during the skin cancer screening if there is a lesion found. This biopsy will be sent to an off-site lab and will be evaluated for signs of skin cancer. In one to two weeks’ time, your dermatologist will contact you with the results. Upon the discovery of skin cancer, further skin cancer treatment options will be discussed between you and your doctor.
