Skin cancer treatment surgery

Skin cancer treatmentTypes of skin cancer treatment

Just as there are several different types of skin cancer, there are a variety of different skin cancer treatments. Your dermatologist can help determine the best skin cancer treatment for your needs. In order to do this, he or she will consider:

  • The specific type of skin cancer you have- basal cell, squamous cell, or melanoma
  • The location of the cancerous area on your body
  • The advancement or progression of the cancer
  • Your prognosis and risk factor for further incidences of skin cancer

Some of the potential treatments for skin cancer include topical treatments, radiation, photodynamic therapy, or surgery. In some cases, more than one method of treatment may be used. All of these treatments have pros and cons associated with them.

Surgery as a skin cancer treatment option

Surgery is one of the more common treatment options for skin cancer. However, there is no one single type of skin cancer surgery. Again, the specific type of treatment that will be used will be decided on with your doctor based on your specific medical case.

Some of the types of skin cancer surgery include:

  • Mohs micrographic surgery- a tissue-sparing procedure that removes tissue layer by layer to ensure that a minimum of healthy skin is disturbed.
  • Simple excision- the cancerous area is cut from the skin, along with some surrounding tissue
  • Shave excision- a small blade is used to “shave” the tumor off the surface of the skin
  • Electrodessication and curettage- this two part surgery involved a sharp, spoon shaped tool used to cut the cancerous area from the tool. Afterwards, an electrode is used to introduce an electric current that stops bleeding and kills any remaining cancerous cells.
  • Cryosurgery- the affected area is frozen off
