Skin cancer treatment with cryosurgery

Skin Cancer successfully treated

Dermatologist examining melanoma on woman

Skin cancer treatment is highly successful; even as skin cancer is now the most common of all cancers in the United States. The reason for this success is that skin cancer is highly curable when diagnosed and treated early by a dermatologist. Treatment is typically performed on an outpatient basis under a local or topical anesthesia. Board-certified dermatologists offer today’s most advanced technology and surgical techniques for treating basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Skin cancer treatments

There are many effective treatments for treating and eliminating skin cancer. Early stages of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer may be treated non-surgically using:

  • Cryosurgery
  • Curettage
  • Light-based treatments
  • Laser treatments
  • Topical creams

These cancers can also be eliminated by excision, or by performing Mohs micrographic surgery. If a patient is a poor surgical candidate, the next option is superficial radiation therapy. Melanoma, when diagnosed in its earliest stages, may be surgically removed by a dermatologist it in their office. However, once the melanoma has spread beyond the top layer of the skin, more extensive treatment will be necessary. This often means that the melanoma will need to be removed by a general surgeon or a surgical oncologist. The surgery may be performed in conjunction with radiation, chemotherapy, and/or immunotherapy treatments.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is a simple, non-invasive procedure in which your Charlotte dermatologist uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy both cancerous and benign growths on the surface of the skin. It is an especially effective treatment for pre-cancerous skin lesions as well as a number of other skin conditions including warts, skin tags, and moles. The application of liquid nitrogen to skin lesions and growths allows your dermatologist to specifically target damaged areas, destroying them at the cellular level. After the procedure, the affected area will scab over and typically heals within three to six weeks. Cryosurgery offers a number of advantages:

  1. It’s a simple, affordable outpatient procedure
  2. It’s mildly uncomfortable
  3. It has a low risk of infection.

Be sure to consult with a board-certified dermatologist to see if cryosurgery is right for your skin condition.
