Are there helpful tips for dry skin care during the Charlotte winter?

Preventing dry skin

Dry skin care is crucially important during the fall and winter seasons. This is the time when Charlotte dermatologists see an uptick in dry skin problems. Cold, dry weather causes dry skin as we alternate between that and forced air from indoor heating systems. The first step is to properly moisturize and care for your skin. The goal is to keep your skin moisturized, and to help reduce the look of wrinkled, aging skin.

 Replace exfoliation with gentle cleansing

During this time of year, the use of scrubs and harsh toners should be avoided. Exfoliation is used to generate new cell growth in warm weather conditions. However, it can cause excessive dryness and irritation on already dry skin. Exfoliation also can remove crucial skin oils and produce micro-damage through which irritants can easily enter. Switch to a gentle, creamy, non-foaming cleanser that doesn’t contain astringents.

You still need sunscreen

Even in the winter, it is important to wear Sun Protection Factor (SPF) all year round. Especially on sunny, snowy days. Consider sunscreens which contain natural ingredients such as titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide, as these ingredients are generally less irritating to skin. Because dry skin is very sensitive to topical products, non-chemical sunscreens should be the final step in your morning skin care regimen.

Treat episodes of dry skin immediately

Ignoring it will not make it go away; dry skin conditions can get worse if not treated. Windburned skin is caused by prolonged exposure to windy and/or icy conditions. In such conditions, apply a soothing balm overnight. After a few days, if you do not notice improvement, schedule an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist in the Charlotte area.
