Winter skin care
Dry skin care is important during the dry winter climate and even drier indoor heat. Here we are in the coldest year of the month, and for many, the exposure to this environment may have already taken a toll. However, there is still time to find a daily routine that will ensure you enjoy a hydrated, glowing complexion. We want to offer some helpful tips for preventing, soothing, and repairing dry skin.
Your home environment
Dry air dries out your skin. At least during the winter months, we recommend that you place a humidifier in the home, or at least in the rooms where you spend the most time. You certainly should not overlook the bedroom. The humidifier increases the moisture level in your home, helping your skin to retain its natural moisture. If possible, set the heat thermostat low or at a moderate temperature.
Consider a change in diet
Weight-watching gurus will shudder when we recommend increasing your daily intake of fats. This change in diet can help with dry skin. Put down the milkshake and try eating a diet that is rich in walnuts, olive oil, oily fish, and avocados. At the same time, consider cutting down on, or eliminating alcohol and caffeine, and drink more water. Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, which means that they will cause the body to shed water.
Cleanse gently
Winter is not the time to use cleansers that are astringents or contain drying ingredients, like fragrances or additives. Consider natural cleansers that are formulated with chamomile or oatmeal. Ask your dermatologist to recommend a gentle cleanser that will not strip skin of its natural oils.
Develop a healthy nightly routine
Every night before bed is a crucial time to provide dry skin care. You will need a routine that will ensure healthy or protected skin in the morning. Apply a face serum and moisturizer along with a gentle eye cream. Consult your dermatologist if your skin condition includes redness and eczema. After a long and chilly day, the natural desire is to stand in the heat of an evening shower. However, it is important to limit showers to five minutes or less of warm (not hot) water. As soon as you dry off, while the skin is still damp, apply a thick body moisturizer. Be sure to coat your hands and lips with a moisturizer.
