Skin care can be somewhat complex, and if you have naturally oily skin, it can lead to a lot of frustration. Oily skin typically clogs pores and leads to increased risk for acne breakouts. There is always a silver lining, and people with oily skin can enjoy the tradeoff that oil helps preserve the skin, and people with oily skin tend to have fewer wrinkles. The key for you is to decrease the level of oil while still maintaining your skin’s natural moisture.

What causes oily skin?

There are a number of reasons for an oily complexion, let’s look at some of the most common explanations. We can blame our hormones for just about anything and your skin also is on that list. Hormonal imbalances can be caused by anything from diet, to birth control use, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. Hormonal changes can lead to overactive sebaceous glands, which makes the outer layer feel oily. Studies have shown that dairy products in the diet stimulates oil glands in the skin and even lead to acne. Like everything else about you, genetics will determine whether you’re more or less likely to have oily skin. The only way to overcome your genetic propensity is to manage what increases your oil production.

Dermatologist tips for those with oily skin

Even if your skin is oily, you still need to incorporate a moisturizer in your skin care regimen. Consult with a board-certified dermatologist to develop a skin care regimen for your skin type. To help manage oily skin, dermatologists recommend the following tips:

  • Wash your face every morning, evening, and any strenuous activity.
  • Never scrub your skin. Scrubbing irritates your skin, which can make it look worse.
  • Choose skin care products that are labeled “oil free” and “noncomedogenic.”
  • Use a gentle, foaming face wash. Do not use oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers.
  • Apply the proper moisturizer daily. Look for a moisturizer that also contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Wear sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and do not use sunscreens that contain fragrance or oils.
  • Wear oil-free, water-based makeup.
  • Never sleep in your makeup.
  • Use blotting papers throughout the day. Avoid rubbing the paper on your face. This will spread the oil to other areas.
  • Only touch your face when you are cleansing. Make sure that your hands are clean when applying moisturizer, sunscreen, or makeup.

Every person’s skin is different and what may work for a friend may not work for you. If you are concerned about your oily complexion or the amount of oil your skin is producing; make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist.
