Skin care and cosmetics
Have you ever really thought about how the skin care products you are using can be affecting your skin? Many women don’t. However, if you are not considering the impact of the products you put on your face, you might be unknowingly sabotaging your skin care.
Choosing the right cosmetics for your skin
We generally choose cosmetics for their aesthetic effect, not for their ingredients or medicinal properties. If you’re looking at your beauty routine holistically, you should consider both the composition of the products you put on your face and their effects.
For example, most foundations are either silicon based or water based. If you have very dry skin, a water based foundation is your best bet, as it will hydrate and give you a healthy glow. Avoid water based foundations if you are oily- you may get too much shine over the course of the day.
Silicon based foundations are great for smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but they are not ideal for those with sensitive skin- they can be irritating and cause breakouts. In general, mineral based make-up is the best for all types of skin – it won’t clog pores, creating breakouts, and is great for sensitive skin. Finding the optimal skin care routine
Beyond the type of makeup you use, you should also ensure that your skin care regimen is consistent with supporting your skin care goals. Here are a few tips to ensure that your skin care and cosmetics are working together harmoniously:
- Make sure your cosmetic brushes, blenders, and other applicators are cleaned thoroughly after each use to kill bacteria and prevent infection
- Follow the expiration date or manufacturer’s guidelines for discarding old makeup. You’d be surprised at what can grow on a pallet or in a cream!
- Never go to sleep with your makeup on
- Avoid wearing makeup at the gym or for other physical activity where you are likely to sweat
- Remove all of your makeup gently and thoroughly at the end of the day as the first part of your nightly skin care routine, using a remover that is formulated for your skin
- Give your face an occasional break- if you wear cosmetics all the time, plan for a day or two off per week to let your skin breathe
