Skin care product application tips

Skin care sequence matters

Skin care products that are used singularly can be an excellent solution for damaged skin. However, quite often, our skin care regimen calls for multiple products. If skin care products are not applied in the correct order, it is very difficult to get the desired results from your daily regimen.

A simple rule

Although it is a serious pursuit, proper skin care should be simple and easy. When it comes to determining which product goes on in what order, consider three rules:

  1. Apply products with the thinnest consistency, graduating to the thickest.
  2. Liquids first, then oils.
  3. Start with the ingredients that need to penetrate into the skin such as antioxidants and serums, and finish with the products that need to sit on top of the skin such as moisturizers.

In this article, we are only discussing the daytime routine for now. The daytime priority is to protect your skin from the sun, pollution, and the elements.

A recommended regimen and order of application:

  1. Cleansers

Generally, it is often enough to simply wash your face with warm water. If you must use a cleanser, wash with a gentle product that is fragrance free and that is designed for your skin type.

  • Toners

There was a time when toners are harsh and would irritate the skin. Modern formulations of toners can may be comprised of antioxidants and/or vitamin B derivatives, which is very good for our skin. Make sure that the toner that you use is intended for your particular skin issue. If you have never used a toner and your skin looks healthy, skip the toner.

  • Antioxidant serum

Serums are super-concentrated and are designed to address specific concerns. There are countless types of serums on the market, but for your daytime regimen, use only antioxidant serums.

  • Acne treatment

Acne spot treatments, like serums, need to be applied as close to the skin as possible. Consult your dermatologist for the best way to apply it. Acne treatments can dry out your skin, so apply only on spots where you need it.

  • Moisturizer

Nearly everyone needs extra hydration after exposure to the sun, wind, harsh chemicals in the air. The best time to apply a moisturizer is while the skin is still damp. Most dermatologists recommend applying the moisturizer after your serum and spot treatment.

  • Eye cream

Eye creams are effective for maintaining the health and thickness of the skin on your eyelids. Over time, regular use of eye cream will keep the eyelid skin elastic and can help to prevent against some fine lines or collagen loss. Choose an eye cream with SPF; or apply sunscreen every day.

  • Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be the last step in your daily skin care routine. If you are applying a number of skin care products, you should probably use a physical sunscreen with zinc or a mineral sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens have to be absorbed into the skin to be effective. If you choose to use chemical sunscreens, try to look for formulas that offer moisturizing benefits.
