Summertime skin exposure
Summer is a great time to be active, be outdoors, and spend time with family and friends. However, it can also be a tough time for your skin. You may notice that you have more skin issues and concerns in the summer time.
There are several factors that contribute to this. Obviously, sun exposure is stronger and more frequent in the summer when days are longer and warmer. Also, with warm weather clothing we tend to have more skin exposed, leaving it vulnerable to elements and insects. Finally, exposure to substances such as chlorinated pool water, chemical-laden bugsprays, and natural threats like poison ivy can all wreak havoc on our skin.
How to protect your skin
You don’t need to stay indoors and hide your skin all summer, but there are some smart steps you can take to maintain your skin care routine in the summer months.
- Make application (and re-application) of sunscreen part of your daily skin care routine. UV rays can be very damaging to the skin, resulting in burns, dryness, and even skin cancer or increased signs of aging.
- Cover up when necessary- if you will be outside for a prolonged period or exposed to insects or other pests, wear long sleeves or lightweight layers.
- Pay extra attention to moisturization- summer activities can dry your skin, so make a lightweight moisturizer part of your skin care practice
- Check the labels- look at the ingredients of substances that you put on or near your skin. When possible, opt for natural or hypoallergenic substances
- See an expert- make sure you are seeing your dermatologist regularly, and be sure to make an appointment if any skin care issues crop up over the course of the summer.
If you follow these tips and utilize common sense with your skin care routine, you can have both an enjoyable and healthy summer.
