Skin care myths

Skin care blogs, vlogs, and magazine articles can be found everywhere. Unfortunately, not every skin care commentator or author, gathers their information from reputable sources like the Academy of Dermatology, from a board-certified dermatologist, or from any physician. Hence, an earnest search for a proper skin care regimen can lead to an astounding amount of conflicting information. Much of this information is driven by an endless litany of skincare myths. Our goal here, is to dispel some of these common beauty fables.

MYTH 1: SPF makeup is just as effective as a separate SPF

Most SPF in sunscreens provides for UVA and UVB protection. Most makeups and skin enhancing product only provide UVA protection. Relying on getting both from your makeup means that you are most likely failing to get adequate sun protection. Even if your makeup provides adequate protection, it would also require that the makeup be reapplied throughout the day, as sunscreen is.

MYTH 2: You cannot wash your face too much

Washing your face too much can lead to dryness, sensitivity, and irritation.Cleansing is important, but it must not be overdone. The goal is to cleanse your skin without stripping the skin of its natural oils. It’s also important not to rub the skin too harshly.

MYTH 3: Dry skin ages faster

The main cause of prematurely aging skin is sun exposure. Other factors include smoking, lifestyle choices, and exposure to pollution. Exposure to these factors breaks down collagen fibers, which are responsible for keeping the skin looking youthful and plump. Dry skin does not cause wrinkles or aging.

MYTH 4: Hot water opens up your pores

Our pores are not temperature-sensitive. Hot water causes the outer layers of skin to swell, makingthe pores to appear more open. The lukewarm water is ideal or proper cleansing.

MYTH 5: You don’t need anti-ageing products until you’re in your thirties

Anti-aging productswith antioxidants should be used as early as age 21.With regard to antioxidants, the earlier you start, the better. What is most important, is the use of anti-ageing products that are appropriate for your skin type. Products with retinol can begin being added to your regimen in your mid to late 20s.
