Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled overgrowth of abnormal skin cells caused by unrepaired DNA damage triggering a mutation causing skin cells to multiply quickly, forming cancer cells. Skin cancers, especially when caught early, can be treatable.

What is it?

Our skin is our body’s most extensive organ and consists of multiple layers. Skin cancer takes root in the epidermis, formed by squamous cells (the surface layer), and can then infiltrate the basal cells (beneath squamous cells) and melanocytes (the coloring cells).

Skin cancer can affect anyone and can appear anywhere on the body. It primarily manifests on skin regions that have experienced excessive exposure to ultraviolet light - such as the sun, tanning beds or sun lamps. Our medical practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, has experience treating skin cancer across all skin tones and types.

Monitoring any emerging spots or bumps on your skin that deviate in shape, color, size or texture is crucial. If any spots or bumps on your skin itch, bleed, crust over, ooze or notice any unusual or suspect marks on your skin, please contact us immediately to schedule a comprehensive evaluation. After all, it's your skin, and its protection should be your priority.

Beyond your yearly skin review with a board-certified professional at our dermatology clinic, you can conduct regular self-checks using the “ABCDE method.” Seek immediate consultation with an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists if a spot or mole exhibits:

A - Asymmetry in shape
B - Irregular borders
C - Color variations from one area to another
D - Diameter more prominent than that of a pencil eraser
E - Evolution in size, shape or color from a previous check

You can minimize your chances of developing skin cancer by reducing exposure to the sun and safeguarding your skin from UV rays. Though the sunshine is inviting, it can also be hazardous. Sun damage can accumulate all year round—even during the chilliest winters. Use an SPF 30+ sunscreen and limit your time under those harmful rays.

How is it treated?

The experts at Metrolina Dermatology will conduct a thorough assessment of the affected skin. If any suspicious areas are identified, a skin biopsy will be performed.

During a biopsy, a sample of the tissue will be taken for analysis. Metrolina’s on-site medical lab will process and analyze the sample for diagnosis. The laboratory has full accreditation from the College of American Pathologists, signifying it adheres to the highest standards of quality and precision.

The lab will evaluate whether your sample is benign (normal, non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). If it's determined to be cancerous, our proficient skin cancer specialists and board-certified dermatologists will diagnose the specific type of cancer and create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Our clinic is experienced in diagnosing and treating various skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) and sebaceous cell carcinoma.

Our dedicated cancer team, with specialized training and certification, offers a wide range of skin cancer treatments, including surgical excision, Mohs surgery, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. As an affiliate of DOCS Dermatology Group, Metrolina Dermatology has access to state-of-the-art clinical trials for skin cancers that demonstrate a lessened response to conventional treatments.

Remember: Early detection is vital to a successful treatment plan.

THE TREATMENTS BELOW CAN HELP WITH SKIN CANCER:

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common type of skin with more than 4 million cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. There are several types of BCC and they can present as open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps or even scar-like areas on the skin. Like most skin cancers, risk factors for developing basal cell carcinomas include fair skin, blond or red hair, blue or green eyes, history of sun exposure, and tanning bed use. This type of skin cancer usually grows slowly and rarely spreads to other parts of the body. If caught early, appropriate treatment can be performed with a high cure rate.

If left untreated, they can continue to grow and possibly invade into and destroy surrounding tissue. BCC usually develop on sun-exposed areas such as the head, neck and back of hands. When this type of skin cancer is found on the head and neck, hands, or genitals, Mohs Micrographic Surgery (the patient could click this and it would direct them to the page about what is Mohs surgery?) is typically the treatment of choice offering the highest cure rate.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are the second most common type of skin cancer.  These skin cancers also typically arise on sun-exposed areas presenting as scaly red patches, non-healing open sores or elevated growths.  They can be mistaken as a wart of scaly dry patch of skin. Risk factors for developing SCC include sun exposure, tanning bed use, fair skin types, as well as chronic skin infections, skin inflammation, and disease that compromise the immune system. Although SCC can spread to other parts of the body, with early diagnosis and treatment,  SCC is highly curable.  Treatment is similar to treatment with BCC.

Of the three most common skin cancers, Melanoma is the most serious and most deadly.  If caught early, melanoma has an excellent prognosis.  Melanomas can develop anywhere but most often occur on the chest and back in men and on the lower legs in women. The face and neck are also common locations for melanoma.  Melanoma originates in the melanocytes, which are pigment-producing cells of the skin, thus most melanomas appear dark brown or black, but can also appear blue, pink or even white. These lesions are usually not uniform in shape, border, color, or surface. If you have many moles, a history of dysplastic nevi, or a family history of melanoma, it is important to see your dermatologist for regular skin checks and perform monthly skin examinations at home.  For more information, go to http://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/melanoma

Other rare tumors of the skin include atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC), sebaceous carcinoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), and Merkel cell carcinoma.  Although many of these tumors are best treated by Mohs micrographic surgery, others may be treated with standard excision or referral to another specialist.
