Hives (Urticaria)

A prevalent skin condition marked by itchy, red welts of varying sizes that can manifest anywhere on the body.

What is it?

Urticaria, commonly known as “hives”, are a common skin condition resulting from irritation to the skin. Often triggering an allergic reaction, hives can be caused by food, medications, insect stings, or even stress.

Hives typically presents as raised, red, itchy welts or bumps on the skin’s surface. They vary in size and shape, and may be small or large, sometimes joining together to form larger patches. Patients may experience intense burning, itching, or swelling.

This skin irritation typically resolves on its own within a few hours to a few days, but fresh hives may develop, giving the impression of an ongoing or migrating condition. Chronic urticaria is a less frequent occurrence wherein the condition extends beyond six weeks, potentially indicating a more severe hidden health issue.

How is it treated?

At Metrolina Dermatology, our specialists are trained to identify the underlying cause and triggers of your hives, which is essential for effectively managing and preventing future outbreaks.

Treatment for hives may include antihistamines, corticosteroids, or other medications to reduce itching and swelling. While hives are not contagious, our treatment options are designed to help alleviate the discomfort and painful symptoms associated with the condition.
