Herpes

A highly contagious viral infection that causes painful, small, pus-filled sores, typically on the genitals or mouth.

What is it?

Herpes is a widespread and highly contagious condition that is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. It yields small, painful blisters, usually visible on or near the mouth or genitals, but can emerge anywhere on the body.

Two variants of viruses are the root cause of herpes: Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is mainly responsible for oral herpes, and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2), which is primarily responsible for genital herpes.

While some people may be asymptomatic, it is still possible for people who carry the virus to spread herpes.

How is it treated?

Treatment for herpes typically starts with antiviral medications that may be prescribed by dermatologists. These medications help control outbreaks, reduce the severity of symptoms, shorten the duration of flare-ups, and lower the risk of transmission. While treatments do not cure herpes, they can help alleviate discomfort associated with the condition.

At Metrolina, our board-certified providers may also offer guidance on lifestyle factors that could trigger flare-ups, such as stress and poor sleep. With proper and proactive treatment, patients with herpes can reduce pain and discomfort associated with the condition.
