Seborrheic Dermatitis

A common skin condition characterized by red, itchy and flaky patches, typically occurring on the scalp, face or other oily areas.

What is it?

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a prevalent skin disorder that exhibits symptoms of red, flaky and itchy skin, predominantly on the scalp. However, it can also impact other areas of the body where sebaceous glands are present such as the face, chest and back.

While the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not known, it is linked to a yeast known as Malassezia that resides on the skin or is an inflammatory reaction associated with oil-rich skin. The symptoms often vary in intensity and may intermittently recede and later reappear.

The condition may cause discomfort but is not inherently harmful. Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious.

How is it treated?

There is not a cure for seborrheic dermatitis, however, the experts at Metrolina Dermatology can effectively diagnose and treat your condition with medicated shampoos to help alleviate symptoms like rashes or itching. Treatments may also include a prescription-strength corticosteroid cream, foam, ointment, or oil for the affected area.

With seborrheic dermatitis, it’s recommended that treatment is received as soon as possible to avoid thickening of the scale or potential infection.
