Psoriasis is
an autoimmune condition that affects the skin, causing rapid cell
multiplication beyond the average rate and resulting in skin
inflammation.
Patients with
psoriasis typically exhibit red, inflamed patches of skin covered in thick,
silvery-white scales. These patches are often itchy and can cause burning
sensations and discomfort. The skin around these patches usually feels dry, and
it's not uncommon for the skin to crack and bleed. Inflamed joints are also a
common symptom.
Symptoms can
differ and fluctuate during psoriasis outbreak cycles, lasting from several
days to several weeks. Psoriasis is most commonly a chronic condition and is
not contagious.
How is it treated?
While there is currently no known cure for psoriasis, our board-certified skin specialists at Metrolina Dermatology can assist in managing psoriasis with various treatments like topical corticosteroids and oral retinoids to keep symptoms in check.
We can also treat you with therapies such as salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids, or in certain applications, aloe vera. Our dermatologists may also prescribe light/phototherapy to alleviate symptoms. For more acute cases, oral or injectable medications that assist in restraining the immune system may also be prescribed.
