Skin Pigmentation

The color of your skin is due to the amount of melanin—a substance in your body that produces hair, eye and skin pigmentation—it contains.

What is it?

Skin coloring, or pigmentation, is determined by melanin, a pigment generated by specific skin cells named melanocytes. Melanin is accountable for the hue of your eyes, hair and, most significantly, your skin.

Unusual or inconsistent skin coloration can result from several factors, including, but not limited to, prolonged sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, certain medications and skin injury. Some individuals may encounter pigmentation disorders like hyperpigmentation (dark skin patches) or hypopigmentation (light skin patches). Genetics also influences a person's skin pigmentation.

How is it treated?

Our board-certified dermatologists utilize various methods to identify the causes and categories of pigmentation. They can customize an effective treatment strategy using topical creams, lotions, laser procedures, chemical peels or microdermabrasion solutions.

Additionally, our board-certified dermatologists can advise you on essential lifestyle and skincare alterations that will shield your skin from further harm. They also conduct regular screenings to monitor the state of your skin and chart the progress of treatments.

If you have irregular skin coloration, consulting with our dermatologists in Charlotte, North Carolina, is crucial to ensure appropriate care and management.
